If everything proceeds as planned, Firefly’s lander, named Blue Ghost, will take about 45 days to make a precise journey to its lunar destination near Mons Latreille. This site is an ancient volcanic feature within Mare Crisium, also known as the “Sea of Crises,” a vast basin over 300 miles (483 kilometers) wide on the Moon’s near side.
“Mare Crisium was formed by early volcanic eruptions and later flooded with basaltic lava more than 3 billion years ago,” Firefly explained. “This unique landing site offers an opportunity for our payload partners to gather vital data on the Moon’s regolith (a mix of rock and dust), geophysical properties, and the effects of solar wind and Earth’s magnetic field.”
The Blue Ghost lander will carry an array of scientific experiments and technology demonstrations. Among them is a “Lunar PlanetVac” system designed to collect and sort Moon soil samples.
