The stolen artifacts were part of the “Dacia: Empire of Gold and Silver (Gold Helmet of Cotofenesti) exhibition, which featured the history of the Dacians, an ancient society once dominant in present-day Romania before their conquest by the Romans. Launched in July, the exhibition featured treasures borrowed from different Romanian institutions.
According to a news release on Drents Museum’s website, the Helmet of Cotofenesti—discovered in a Romanian village almost a century ago—was described as a “masterpiece.”. The helmet’s design included mythological scenes and a pair of eyes located above the wearer’s, thought to deter enemies in battle and protect against the “evil eye.” (Gold Helmet of Cotofenesti)
