“We were contacted by a family member of a missing person from North Carolina in early December. Since then, we’ve collaborated with them, waiting until weather conditions improved for a comprehensive area search,” Erwin said. “They have a specific area they want to explore, particularly the debris piles.”

The family of the missing person joined the search efforts Friday, covering the Chestoa area and Interstate 26 with Unicoi County Search and Rescue and the EMA to assess the debris fields left by Hurricane Helene.
Erwin informed News Channel 11 that the missing person’s spouse was previously found deceased in Unicoi County, around 12 miles from North Carolina. While search crews were hopeful of quickly finding the missing person, previous searches have been unsuccessful.
“We’ve communicated with management teams who are actively observing the area,” Erwin mentioned. “In one instance, a North Carolina cleanup crew member discovered a body amid debris. These teams are extremely vigilant and meticulous in their work.”

Residents and visitors are urged by Unicoi County EMA to stay alert but to avoid the designated search areas while crews are operating.
